Complete by Domitian in 80AD the Roman Coliseum can be found between the Esquiline and Caelian hills, it was the first permanent amphitheatre to be built in Rome. It's size and grandeur, along with its practical and efficient organisation make it one of the ancient Roman Empire.
When full to capacity the coliseum would hold in excess of 50,000 spectators, all jostling to get the best possible view of one of the many attractions on display. The base of the building covered a massive six acres (615ft x 510ft) and it's vault span between eighty radial walls to support massive tiers of seating. It's sheer size means that it remains one of the most imposing buildings in the world and one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions.
Today you can explore the building and get lost in the centuries old shadows. There is a small fee upon entry and usually a large queue. If you are thinking about viewing the coliseum then we would highly recommend joining one of the many excellent organised tours. These can be found near the ticket hall and for a few Euros over the normal entry fee mean that you get to jump the queue and get a real feel for the places history. Tours last around two hours and allow you to get a much more detailed view of this impressive structure. You will also get a free tour of one of the many attractions Rome has to offer included in the price so they really are great value for money. If touring in the summer time you will want to take plenty of drinking water with you as the temperature combined with the many steps can leave you feeling a little dehydrated.
